Warrior Wrestling 2 Aims To Be 'Grand Finale' Of 'All In' Weekend
CHICAGO HEIGHTS -- A high school principal is hoping pro wrestling fans will cap off "All In" weekend with his school's "Warrior Wrestling" show on Sunday night.
This weekend of "All In" is a busy one in Chicago for pro wrestling. When the highly anticipated "All In" independent wrestling show was announced for the Sears Centre earlier this March, local promoters began looking for ways to build around the excitement.
In total, this weekend will see a four-day wrestling podcast convention (Thursday-Sunday), two AAW wrestling shows at the Logan Square Auditorium (Thursday and Friday), Lucha Libre in Logan Square's Unity Park (Saturday), and "Warrior Wrestling" at Marian Catholic high school (Sunday).
“The 'All In' weekend has kind of become the new Wrestlemania weekend,” Marian Catholic high school principal Steve Tortorello tells TheTussle.com. “There’s thousands and thousands of people flying into Chicago for wrestling.
“Warrior Wrestling is the nightcap. We are the caboose. We are the grand finale -- the encore - if you will.”
Tortorello started "Warrior Wrestling" in May as a wrestling promotion and fundraiser. Proceeds go towards an endowment fund to raise money for scholarships. Tortorello says the first show was successful enough to warrant a sequel event.
“Our hope -- knock on wood -- is that all these shows are successful and every show that we do we add more and more money to that fund, so we can help kids this year and for many years to come.”
The school's inaugural show in May featured a main event between ex-WWE wrestlers Alberto El Patron (Del Rio) vs. Jack Swagger. In this follow-up, Tortorello collected top indie stars from around the world (Rey Mysterio, Austin Aries, Fenix, Pentagon, Brian Cage, Jeff Cobb, Rich Swann and Sammy Guevara) for an eight-man "War of Attrition" match.
For Tortorello, a lifetime pro wrestling fan, the ability to promote more "Warrior Wrestling" shows allows him to continue combining his two passions in life.
"Sometimes I'm blown away by the awe of it," Tortorello says. "I have my dream day job here at Marian Catholic. I'm a Marian graduate, and I'm dedicated to Catholic education and was honored to come back here years ago as a teacher and later as a principal.
"It's incredible that my dream day job also yields me the opportunity to do a passion project that I also have always loved."
Warrior Wrestling 2 starts at 7:30 p.m. There will also be a VIP Fan Fest prior to the show from 5:15 p.m. to 7:15 p.m.
